Previous name was "Sally H VII"

Sally H VII was commissioned for E.E. Hayes in 1971 (who also commissioned the Sally V (1960) and VI)

Who was E.E. Hayes?... well that took a while. I finally found "earl ewing hayes"
http://dlaweb.whoi.edu/PHP/FAID/faids_files/MC-90_Hays_E.html
A nuclear physicist and oceanographer who worked for the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute. His expertise was undersea acoustics which he used to image previously unmapped ocean depths

while employed at Woods Hole, E.E. Hayes designed a 4 seater mini submarine for the Office of Naval Intelligence called the "Alvin".

With Navy cooperation, our group at WHOI, under the leadership of Earl Hays, drew up specifications for a somewhat changed and enlarged version of Sea Pup that was deemed more suitable for the anticipated scientific work. WHOI put this proposal out to public bid, and after discussions with several
potential builders, General Mills was awarded the contract. The cereal maker initially offered to build the sub for less than a half million dollars. After WHOI's additions and changes, it would cost nearly twice that amount. Meanwhile, General Mills sold off its electronics division to Litton Systems, Incorporated. Litton, however, let Froehlich complete the job.
On 5 June 1964, as a spring sun shone brightly overhead, the little sub was christened at Woods Hole. It was no longer Sea Pup. It had become Alvin, a name that was already being used informally by WHOI's Deep Submergence Group, which was in charge of preparing the submersible for sea duty.

do ya'll think Epstein's yacht could have a mini sub?

"personnel to oversee the project. In March, he chose Earl Hays, a physicist by training and Navy officer in the Pacific during World War II, who had worked at Brookhaven and Los Alamos"
So E.E. Hays was a navy man through and through, and he was pivotal in Nuclear development:

PATENT ON PARTICLE ACCELERATION....ATOMIC ENERGY COMISSION
US Navy was pouring money into oceanic research for the very practical reasons of underwater warfare. I think yachts are excellent covert military vehicles as they are "independent"
Edit: Alvin was originally launched from this 105 ft vessel (Lulu) made of two pontoon boats

Admittedly the izmo is only 80 ft, and was originally only 71, but it was built 10 years after the original Alvin was conceived, so I could see a more miniature 2 seater sub fitting w/in.
For example the 2 seater Triton:
https://tritonsubs.com/products-services/all-subs/t10002/
At 10.5ft in length, the Triton 1000/2 has a deck footprint which allows it to be easily stowed on-board your yacht. A single existing crew member can be cross-trained to pilot and maintain the submersible. The Triton 1000/2 is an excellent choice if the owner wishes to be the pilot as he or she may dive with a family member and share the experience.
The 3 year ownership clause that the non-profit had to sign to receive the yacht makes me even curiouser

It’s long been reported JE had a mini sub. For example it was modified so wheelchair-bound Stephen Hawkins could take a ride.

nope. that wasn't a mini sub. that was a 40+ passenger tourism sub that was modified for hawking

Okay, I misinterpreted: as far as I can determine JE is not known to have owned a sub. He chartered one from a company called Atlantis operating out of St. Thomas for a scientific conference on St. Thomas attended by Hawking.
Reports say JE modified or even customized the sub for SH. I’ll guess this just meant one or more seats were unbolted and temporarily removed.
So Maxwell’s next boyfriend Ted Waitt is known to have a sub on his yacht “that [she]... knew how to pilot” says the NYT. It begs the question where/when did she learn? Pictures of Hawking’s big underwater adventure definitely show someone other than GM in the driver’s seat.
