I thought he said "spacecop" and somehow it still made sense to me.

specops

Special forces, or special operations forces are military units highly trained to perform unconventional, often high-risk missions. Special forces, as they would now be recognised, emerged in the early 20th century, with a significant growth in the field during the Second World War.

Maine State Police Lt. Christopher Grotton, who supervises the Tactical Team, said Friday that different crises warrant different responses. A hostage situation inside a downtown bank, for example, calls for different weapons and tactics than does a guy running around in the woods firing a rifle.

Apparently it was one of the US's many poorly taken care of veterans who was pissed off about cancer and trying to kill VA staff.

Still, the threat was neutralized long before Duke showed up on scene. One helluva story though.

Um, no it doesn't. Anyone and their mother can dress up like a soldier. It's only illegal to claim to have been in service when you hadn't or claim numerous awards if you hadn't received them.

On the other hand, fucking cops.

SCOTUS ruled the Stolen Valor act unconstitutional. Only claiming and displaying certain medals is illegal. Among those are Medal of Honor and Purple Heart.

There was a dude that dressed up as a service member here in Canada last Remembrance Day ('mericans call it Veterans Day iirc, Nov. 11?). He gave an interview on CBC, and some current members noticed his uniform was all fucky. He's facing charges now under the criminal code. I don't know if its the same down there.

Specifically it's illegal to claim or fabricate military decorations, IE medals of honor and such. They can wear all of the military hardware that they want, as the Stolen Valor act of 2005 only stops them from wearing military decorations, and the 2013 amendment to that same act doesn't really change that. It's more targeted at the ILLEGAL MANUFACTURE AND SALE of said medals if anything.

As a Canadian, my first reaction to seeing these guys on the street would probably be "Why are there soldiers here?" Not even our SWAT equivalent wears anything like that. Seems excessive for civilian level police, is all.

The goal is intimidation tactics, the entire point is for it to be excessive. There are two ways you can keep your country in control

  1. Love and prosperity
  2. Fear and poverty

The U.S. has chosen the latter of the two

Your SWAT is running around with plastic, colorfully so, firearms. I am not sure they should be the model for the world? Then again, I know the US police should be limited to being the model for a third world dictatorship. :(

As a Canadian, these guys are your immediate neighbors. My research says they're Maine State Police's Tactical Unit.

Impersonating soldiers is a felony. Not dressing up as them.

No. Stolen Valor Act only says you can't dress up with insignia and claim to be a soldier. Anyone can wear camouflage.

The Stolen Valor Act is also unconstitutional

Great. So when will the military start dressing as civilian police, and do some civilian policing duties which will be overly glossed over as an extension of their military duties or just a training exercise?
