The opening is placed facing the same direction as the wind typically travels (apparently some wind towers can change which side is opened too), this sucks air out the top, which in turn sucks air through the hole in the ground.
Air contracts underground, then heats up as it rises through the house. Both of these pull air through the system. Having the upper window downstream helps improve efficiency, but it could also use a simple flue design.
Persia? Isn't that the place the US Military is poised to bomb into the Stone Age because they refuse to use our fake currency?
I could see wanting to replicate this clever system, but Zoning wouldn't allow for the tower, the EPA would prohibit due to the proximity to water, the bank would still require AC for a mortgage....
No the holes in the tower are on the downwind side which creates a low pressure zone. The wind is pulling air out of the tower. If wind reverses so does the air flow direction. Cool air would come out of the ground hole instead of into the home. They must have had a way to close the vents on the tower or to close the ground holes if the wind changed.
Funny how things called “swamp coolers” don’t work in the swamp where it’s so humid the moisture can’t evaporate and therefore there’s no way to cool the fuck off God I’m ready for winter to start.
If you have an underground bunker house then there's no problem living in tornado zones, but most people buy a trailer or flimsy plywood house in tornado zones, idk why.
Tornado Alley = the midwestern US = where all the food comes from
However, tornadoes, in spite of the potential damage they can cause, are often surprisingly small, and enough early warning is provided that there's enough time to seek shelter. That doesn't mean that your farm or home won't have damage, but it beats living in NYC or Commiefornia.
Persians aren't the same breed of human as arabs. They are smarter and generally less fundamentalist. Their biggest problems are that the world wants their oil and the Rothschilds want to control their currency. Their only defense against this is to run a strict theocracy to keep the population homogenous and unsubverted. They broke free from (((US))) control in the 70's and have been Israel's biggest adversary since.
There are even things like this that can keep food frozen in the desert with no electricity used. I don't know if it can keep stuff frozen year around or just really cold, but ancients had some awesome engineering abilities.

What makes the hot air go down the hole when hot air rises?

No.
Venturi is caused by reduction in size of port.
These towers use simple redirection and/or the Coanda Effect. Temperature gradients.
[–] Thissandwich 0 points 2 points 2 points (+2|-0) ago
That makes sense. I see the water canal now.
[–] SpeshulSnowflaek ago
Correct. This device is a giant carburetor, except instead of fuel, it pulls cool air.

Hot air rising up the tower creates a low pressure in the chamber, which sucks in air from the quannat.
It was Yazdi technology, from the pre-islamic period of Persia.

US mil isn't bombing Iran because Hillary isn't president, and the last significant chickenhawk, Bolton, was fired.

It actually doesn't matter what direction the holes are as long as they aren't directly catching wind, the chimney effect will keep the air flowing

Why do you live in a swamp?
Also why do people live in tornado zones.
I don't know. Just seems like an odd choice.

The sketch is missing a component: there's an adjoining structure with a pool of water to effect the "evaporative" cooling.
[–] CowWithBeef ago
I figured this would only work for a few days until the tunnel walls warmed up. The evaporation pool would make a lot of sense.
