i don't notice huge distortion, just seems a bit out of focus

This is exactly how I use my Tokina 11-16mm lens. I keep the subject in the foreground while getting a good view of it's surroundings.

You've got it wide open, so you have a shallow depth of field. It's a nice composition, but I think it would be better if it wasn't quite so soft. If you can get the plate and cake razor sharp it will do a lot for the picture.

I really like these kind of photos, inspires some of my own work, hopefully ill eventually get a camera that I can do this properly with.
