There's a huge disconnect between italic and cursive learning (at least when they taught me in the US.). It's maddening. I like cursive italic (Getty and Dubay) so much better. Definitely worth working on your handwriting with- I've had some success with their program and the use of a cursive-italic ground nib. (Slows you down a bit and helps the eye see letters better.) I love it. I started using cursive several years ago as a form of secret code. . . Many people cannot read script.
