The poster is referring most likely to the "Condor Cluster" a supercomputer built by the USAF to do image processing by wiring together ~1800 PS3s and installing Linux on them. At the time PS3s were being sold at less-than-cost because Sony knew people would pay the difference by buying games. So the Air Force was buying 1/2 off scalable GPUs. It worked out well for them, but Sony lost their shit, removed the ability to install Linux on all future Playstations and IIRC they sued the USAF for fraud or something.

Could you elaborate a little on what exactly this process is and what it achieves? I don't think I've ever heard of them being used that way.
