CoH1 is much better, gameplay-wise, than CoH2. In my opinion CoH1 is the better balanced title. It also features full mod support, meaning you can choose from a healthy selection of fun mods like the Blitzkrieg mod (increases lethality of weapons, adds some realism, adds a ton of new units and reworks doctrines), the Eastern Front mod (adds two new factions), or The Great War 1918 (set in WW1).

The New Steam Version is the version of CoH that works with Steam servers for multiplayer. The old version used some middleware company called Quazal, but Relic stopped using their services (I think this happened after THQ went under and Sega bought Relic, but I can't remember for sure). This is technically the latest version of the game, and this is the one you should be installing/playing.

The first one is really good just play the campaign and see if you like the game. After the first game nothing really changes in terms of gameplay besides adding extra units.

Cool, thanks. Do you know if there's any difference between the Original and New Steam versions?

I think the old game used game spy and the steam versions don't? I don't entirely remember off the top of my head.
