Include Civilization and we had the same PC games growing up.

Favorite memory with Civ was finding out how all the in game text was editable with the QBasic program on dos. My brothers and I had blast changing to silly and crass things our young minds would think of.

Unreal Tournament. There were games before that, but THAT game hooked me hard.

The original UT was pretty amazing.

Oh man, it's where I learned all the moves for gaming. And the maps were amazing. You know of course I am talking about CTF Facing Worlds.

Best FPS ever. I repurchased it on GOG a few weeks ago. Still freaking amazing.

2k4 was a big step in the graphics. I was a idiot and bought 2k3 MONTHS before 2k4 came out lol. Whatever, still worth the purchase. I bought the UT pack on Steam and now I install 2k4 once a year and play again.

I have a disability, and can't use a controller, so I am stuck only being able to play games on my PC, and only games that aren't button mashers. I don't have the finger speed and strength for high speed button pounding.

I'm always looking for recommendations for good games, by the way. If any of you really love a game that you've played, that is turn based, or can be paused. Please help a guy out.

DOS Based: EGATrek <- Once you get the hang of it, it's a lot of fun.

Shareware EGATrek w/info about buying the registered version

Open Source: Angband (if you like text-based dungeon crawlers)

Angband Homepage

Just two off the top of my head.

OMG, that is friggin awesome! That takes we back.

I haven't played a text dungeon crawl in 20 years. Thank you. I'm going to really enjoy that. :)

Sorry to hear that, man. Well I'm not very invested into the turn based strategy genre, but my father often plays a game called Panzer Corps. It's pretty cool, and I believe you play the German side. Maybe you would like it.

Also, have you looked into slower paced RPG games? My favorite game is Morrowind, and the gameplay is very slow while still being 1st person.

Thanks very much. I'll check out Panzer Corps. I have Morrowind, and it's a favorite of mine. RPGs are the one genre I can usually play pretty well.

Have a small list, I love turn based games!
* Battle for Wesnoth (Free TBS)
* Battleships Forever (Free 2d Space strategy)
* Dominions 4 (Fantasy Risk) * Darkest Dungeon (TB Roguealike squad thingy) * Endless Legend (Fantasy Civ) * Infinity Wars (F2P Cards & Deck building)
* Dune (Still runs with DOSBox, classic).

I could go on much more, but I'll leave it at that and suggest the first 2 most highly! EDIT: for little more clarity on the types of games.

I've never even heard of most of those. Thanks! I'll enjoy looking for them a lot. :)

This was also my progression. My 386 was the first computer I had with a Modem and an actual HD. Going from my Amiga 500 with 1MB of ram to that was like whoa. No longer did I have to swap floppies all the time! I could dial into these things called BBS and Genie, it was amazing!

That's what I started gaming on. Wolfenstein 3D, Quake, Doom, Marble Madness (On the Commodore Amiga), the list goes on. PC gaming is also responsible for my interest in computers which turned into a career. Thanks Wolfenstein!

The fact that consoles just became the worst of aspects of PC with none of the major benefits. That was it for me. Switched permanently once and for all.
