Emulators are programs which virtually recreate old hardware or software to allow digital copies of old software to run on modern computing systems because in the early years of computers, software was hardcoded to utilize physical assets of the devices they were designed to run on. To prevent the loss of historical software, many coders have banded together to create emulators so that old software can still be used in the modern age where the advancement of technology has resulted in computers unable to run/read old programs. Things like the early computers such as Commodore, Apple and old consoles like Nintendo and Atari. With each successive generation the old hardware gets outmoded and dedicated coders go to work to preserve legacy software so that future generations may enjoy them.
Abandonware are old programs which the license holders have literally not done anything with for decades, primarily old PC titles which may need emulating or virtual console to run, as older software tends to run too fast on new PCs.

A real oldie, a text based game, nethack. Warning, if it hooks you, it will be a real time waster.

If you own original copies of classic consoles and games the emulating is also an option.
