I once saw a white owl sitting on telephone lines in my backyard, looking for a meal I think. I went into to get my camera and as I was looking up to get an idea of what setting I should use, my dogs bark. It takes off flapping these huge white wings. It was so beautiful, I snapped I few shots, but they turned out blurry and dark. I can still see the mental impression that owl made on me. Amazing. No one ever believes my story though:(

Thanks for the link. Owls are one of the very few types of birds that I find fascinating to look at, yet they seem so vicious. I imagine them saying, "Yeah, I know I look fab, but you just fucking do it. I dare you."

There is an owl that hangs out around my back porch, mostly through the summer, along with a few others that I will hear around the area. I'm surrounded by mountains and trees tucked away in a valley, but it's really nice to sit and listen to them late at night. No vehicles driving by, no loud neighbors, no trains...it's calming when they're all you hear.

Judging from the photos on that site, I am pretty sure it's the Barred owl. It likes to perch on our boat out back every so often. If not there, then up in a big tree overlooking the yard. I usually just sit and watch it, trying not to move too much. Haven't got to see it in action going after prey since I first saw it a couple years ago, but I don't mind. Seeing it is enough for me.
