I had a bacterial colon infection caused by Clostridium difficile, aka C. Diff, in 2004 at the age of 24 and almost lost my life to this infection multiple times. In 2006 I was the last international patient for a doctor in Australia pioneering the fecal transplant method, with 100% success . The process was illegal here at the time because it was unregulated and so I also had to find a doctor here willing to help me find a fecal donor. 15 of my closest family and friends got tested ( $1,100 in blood tests and a stool sample each!) then, the lucky winner was asked to produce for me like clock - work for 10 days straight. I'm so grateful for this process, which worked after every available antibiotic failed. And although I'm sad it's taken more than a decade for the mainstream medical community in the US to embrace this cure, I'm glad it's happening, and this is a great start. Edit: The reason we need an exchange is because out of those 15 people, only one person passed all the tests... Many were ruled out because they had certain vaccines, or had been exposed to bacteria found in cat litter. All of these people were deemed healthy in every other way.
