There has been plenty of discussion about it, but I decided to take action and create a community to crowdsource the effort of porting Voat to a linux compatible platform. This effort will help free the admins from the clutches of Microsoft and Azure allowing for more affordable alternative hosting solutions. If you have webdev, or linux admin experience, or just think you can lend a hand, head over to /v/voat4linux and contribute, or just spread the word.

It started as hobby, the creator knew c# so why not, then there was a free period for startups given by MS, then the period ends. I think that's how Voat is locked on MS now.

Can't they just try to use Mono in place of .NET

The clutches of Azure? You can also run dotnet on aws, Google cloud, rackspacr etc... Why port it just to get it off azure?

I've been migrating a ton of work code to .Net core. This is doable. Just wish it paid so I could do it full time.

Isn't there already a bunch of open sourced reddit clones in python/node/rails/go that already run on Linux? Why not use one of those instead of rolling YARC.
