Am I wrong to assume this is staged?

As former CWA employee, it's a fucking racket. At least these folks had the stones to walk out, at another undisclosed telcom, they both had us by the short and curlies and it was a fucking circus during negotiation time. Union members would rally and pretty much make themselves look like the unprofessional asshats they are, and we would sometimes vote to strike...but it never happened.

Gutless twats, and when I called them all on it, they had the nerve to come back at me talking about how the union got me those same benefits (that keep getting cut, and cut, and cut, contract after contract).

I left after 14 years and my life is a lot better.

Many of these ignorant union slobs are going to lose their cozy jobs over this. Verizon is well-poised to deal with this strike.

Verizon has trained thousands of non-union workers and moved staff to other locations to fill spots made vacant by picketers.

Lol. Doesn't sound like it. Pushing for better terms when you're easily replaceable is usually a bad idea.

What do you mean about the contracts though? Do they literally last for life or something?

My understanding is that they've been grabbing people from other departments in the company and flying them out to do the work.

That is how it is usually done. I'm part of the union with att. Many of the managers are trained to do our jobs if it comes to that.

Yup. The non-union employees work a ton of extra hours and 6 days weeks but they get paid well for their time and generally make out on the deal. My friends work for Verizon and they will take home almost their full pay in overtime during this strike. The hours may suck, but getting 2 full paychecks every pay period is a good deal. Last time this happened they werent eager for the strike to end. I just wrote my friend about this yesterday and asked him if he was ready for the strike. His response "yup, cha-ching!"

Even so, if they're legally permitted to train replacements (which I support) and there isn't such overwhelming sympathy with the strikers that they can't find people to take their place or the job isn't so shitty no one wants it, then I don't predict it'll last long.

If Verizon sells out the buyer will inherit the contracts.
