It's pretty complicated, but essentially the Ukrainian gov has undergone 2 revolutions in the last decade. In the most recent one, the US, Germany, and Russia wouldn't get a good crisis go to waste, so they all pulled some underhanded bullshit to attempt to install a puppet government:

The West had the explicit goal of taking control of the gas pipelines to cut Eastern European dependence on Russian energy imports. Russia was just trying to preserve it's capital investments. It ultimately turned into a proxy war with no clear good guys, only bad.
