To be fair, masculine pronouns are technically the correct fallback for gender ambiguity in English so the author wouldn't really be incorrect by just using a blanket "he"
The SJW types are trying to unwrite that rule tho so its kind of hard to find on google. It was in MLA(?) guidelines as of a year or two ago.
