Both sides do the same thing. It's time to stop thinking of this as a left/right problem.

Free speech positive liberal here. Putting people into these left/right issue dichotomies is just hurting everyone.

Attack on free speech is a leftist tactic. Witness the PC craze.

And the Commie scares back during the Cold War were, what - hippies?

Anybody whose hold on power can be unseated via argument is going to try and shut down that argument.

  • People who rely on playing the race card will try to stop race relations from improving.
  • People who rely on drumming up the fear of terrorism will try to stop discussion of how to settle Middle East's shit.
  • People who rely on drug trading will try to stop drug reform conversations from happening.
  • People who rely on religion will aggressively stomp out any mention of atheism.

Were you around during the Bush administration? Because that was when the idea of "Free Speech Zones" were dramatically "enhanced" to the point that if you wanted to protest something you had to stand in a cage miles away from the event. All done by a right-wing conservative administration.

So again, I say, this is a political strategy used by all sides, not just left/right.

Pretty much, circumvention of our constitutional rights is about the only bipartisan thing that gets done in Washington.
