Both sides do the same thing. It's time to stop thinking of this as a left/right problem.
[–] Al_Rubyx 0 points 7 points 7 points (+7|-0) ago
Free speech positive liberal here. Putting people into these left/right issue dichotomies is just hurting everyone.
[–] PainTree 0 points 3 points 3 points (+3|-0) ago
Yes, there's usually a bunch of idiots of both sides.

Attack on free speech is a leftist tactic. Witness the PC craze.

And the Commie scares back during the Cold War were, what - hippies?
Anybody whose hold on power can be unseated via argument is going to try and shut down that argument.

Were you around during the Bush administration? Because that was when the idea of "Free Speech Zones" were dramatically "enhanced" to the point that if you wanted to protest something you had to stand in a cage miles away from the event. All done by a right-wing conservative administration.
So again, I say, this is a political strategy used by all sides, not just left/right.

Blasphemy laws. Indecency laws.

Gotta keep clinging to our own little narratives, don't we?
[–] Subtenko 0 points 4 points 4 points (+4|-0) ago
yea, left, right, idgaf FIX THE PROBLEM
[–] Porom 0 points 2 points 2 points (+2|-0) ago
Pretty much, circumvention of our constitutional rights is about the only bipartisan thing that gets done in Washington.
[–] ninjajunkie 0 points 12 points 12 points (+12|-0) ago
Because free speech and free thought are the only things that will destroy their narrative.

Do people understand what free speech is?
Free speech is being able to say what you want without fear of being arrested by the government.
Free speech is not having the platform to say whatever you want whenever you want without intervention by the public.
Example:
The WBC is free to protest a funeral, just the same way that other people are free to drown them out by yelling over top of them.
[–] arrggg 0 points 13 points 13 points (+13|-0) ago
In your example, the WBC assholes are smart enough to stay on public property and protest legally. They do not sneak into the ceremony and start screaming and waving signs during the eulogy, nor do they physically attack people and flip them off on the way out. That is trespassing, disturbing the peace, and assault.
These idiots are going to learn the hard way when Trump starts pressing charges, the paid protest organizers don't care about them and are setting them up for a PR stunt.

Because a company has decided that they don't want to alienate some of their customer base (the gays), and when an employee's donation publicly reflects negatively on the company's image, they should have the right to take action. The problem is that for Brandon, the donation was not limited to his private life. When people associated it with Mozilla rather than Brandon, it stopped being private.
Mozilla and Brandon still have free speech since no one was arrested. It just Mozilla is profit motivated, and it is not good business to piss off potential customers.

I fucking hate that word "the narrative." It's founded in literary critical theory/postmodernism which tries to imply that the world is just a story and physical reality doesn't matter. It should never be used in a context regarding facts except in a derogatory manner. They're not trying to "control the narrative," they're "spreading disinformation."
Anyhow, good on her for calling them out. Things have started to turn around lately on a number of fronts and it's good to see.

If the free will of the American people were unchained things would go very poorly for "special interests".

Free speech is neither left or right is on the Libertarian - Authoritarian Axis. That said, go as far authoritarian as you realy need to or want, but not on free expression, if you get rid of free speech its like making your whole society blind, deaf, and dumb. That said having hairy naked old guys walking around isn't appealing, but these things should be decided locally.

[–] [deleted] 1 point 1 point 2 points (+2|-1) ago
[–] cointelpro_shill ago
Right, why protest Donald Trump? Just avoid him. It's not like he's gonna be leading the country or anything
