CSULA president William Covino announced Monday that the event would not be allowed to continue without opposing speakers: “After careful consideration, I have decided that it will be best for our campus community if we reschedule Ben Shapiro’s appearance for a later date, so that we can arrange for him to appear as part of a group of speakers with differing viewpoints on diversity. Such an event will better represent our university’s dedication to the free exchange of ideas and the value of considering multiple viewpoints.”

This is a good point and universities should strive to have events like this.

But Shapiro and YAF point to the fact that left-wing activists like Cornel West and Angela Davis have been allowed to speak at student events without the need for a conservative response

This is also a good point - what's good for one group is good for all groups. Equality, and all that.

So Now anytime someone wants to speak, we have to find someone with an opposing viewpoint? What if I want to talk about how pedophilia is bad, we have to find an opposing speaker now?

On the flip side, what if I want to talk about something that is very controversial, and people on the other side of the isle refuse to speak about their point of view simply to prevent me from speaking?

This is bad policy for free speech.

Maybe not how pedophilia is good, but someone who specializes in the treatment of pedophilia, deals with criminals who have undergone therapy to understand why they felt it was acceptable and the need to act on their impulses would be welcome. Not someone making pedophilia out as 'good' but someone trying to put the disease in perspective from the perpetrators viewpoint could be seen as an opposing viewpoint. Because you said you just wanted to talk about how it is bad, right?

Pedophilia is a little extreme compared the topics the article is talking about. These are the kind of topics that should have opposing viewpoints because there is not an overwhelming amount of support for one side like there would be with your pedophilia example. No one wants kids hurt - not everyone thinks whitey is the root of all evil and the way to solve it is to racially segregate the masses. This is the kind of stuff that should have truly opposing viewpoints uniting to converse in an open forum.

If they are going to do this kind of thing, they should do it for everyone. It'll be a real shit fest and no one will want to go speak at the college. Problem solved.
