I'm all for Apple taking a stand against government intrusion, but why now? It was my understanding that they had opened phones for them before. Is this a change with Tim Cook or just a marketing scheme? What is different this time?

Because they are probably tired of doing the due process and just want a backdoor so they can access with "reasonable cause". Essentially it's a move of laziness ripe with the ability to abuse it.

And the NSA very likely have access to Apple's source code anyway, I'll be fair and say Apple didn't give it to them and that they stole it, however I am sure they have it.

I think marketing is the key reason on Apple's side, it will be good for them. I suspect they will win, so then watch everyone start to believe the iPhone is super secure and trust it 100%, that would be amazing for the government to have everyone believing it's safe when it's actually compromised and great for Apple also.

I'm sure Apple will win this for those reasons and this is exactly why this one case is being so hyped and publicized.
