So a while back, student radicals at the University of Cape Town (UCT) started to protest against not getting free housing, as well as Cecil Rhodes. As is customary for Social Justice protests, they decided to conduct their 'protest' in a matter to cause maximum disconfort for uninvolved bystanders. They erected a shack (called 'Shackville') in the middle of the road, right in front of the university. The University asked that they relocate their protest, as they were blocking traffic. The entitled, coddled liberal arts students then decided to go on a rampage, collecting art and burning it, torching the office of the vice-chancellor. Also, there were other outrages and enormities that I will describe in this post.
But let's start out with some videos and pictures of the end result. Here you can see the students dancing and singing around a bonfire of art they had bravely set on fire. Some people are happy when creating works of beauty, others when destroying them.
Dancing around burning art - Another angle
Here is an album with some pictures of what they did
Art vandalism
Among the artworks destroyed were five by Keresemose Richard Baholo, one of which was ironically titled "Extinguished Torch of Academic Freedom" and was about... protests at a university. Baholo was a black anti-Apartheid activist and the first black man to get a Master's in Fine Arts at the University of Cape Town.
Another victim of vandalism was the memory of Maria Fuller. She was one of the first women to attend the university, enrolling in 1886. Something South Africa can be proud of, because this is rather early. Unfortunately, she was still white, which simply cannot be forgiven. Her bust was vandalized by the student radicals with red paint (sound familiar?).
After spray painting the bust red, the women wrapped red and white danger tape around the neck of the Fuller bust and tied it to a pillar to make it look like a noose around her neck.
"Bitch!" shouted one of the women as she tied the "noose" securely. source
Other vandalism and racism
Somewhat surprisingly, the institution appears to be standing firm against these lunatics, in sharp contrast with what we have seen in the United States. Particularly the vice-chancellor of the University of Cape Town, a Jewish white man named Max Price, had his office petrol bombed. Price has been vocally opposed to the lawlessness of the radicals, even while supporting their "social justice" goals. After burning his office, the radicals demanded that he be arrested and prosecuted... for "malicious damage to property".
The World War I and II memorials were vandalized with "fuck white people" graffiti. Because these coddled students obviously have a very legitimate gripe. Who cares about defeating Hitler - the people who defeated him were white.
One of the placards they threw into the fire was a commemoration of the life of Jan Smuts, before treating it in this dignified manner. Smuts was a British-educated general who helped write the UN's founding charter. In 1948, his party lost the South African elections, which led to the institution of Apartheid. The tweet celebrating the burning of his picture was accompanied by the text "whiteness is burning".
Works by and/or depicting white people were specifically targeted.
Miscellaneous
The Economist points out that when student radicals demanded the removal of a statue of Cecil Rhodes last year, the university capitulated. But it wasn't enough. It never is. Giving in to the politically correct only emboldens them, so now they step up their demands even further.
Interestingly, once again some of the people claiming that they are oh so 'oppressed' are actually extremely privileged. Not only are they lucky enough to attend university, but they are also in some cases very wealthy. For examples, the Economist reports that one of the students arrested for destruction of property was "the son of the chief executive of Eskom, the state power utility." Who could have imagined that wealthy people like to claim that they are the ones being oppressed?
Lest you think that this sort of thing is only approved of in far-away South Africa, let me give you a link to our very own SRS, which strongly approves of vandalizing art. Someone saying that it is "not cool to burn school property" was downvoted heavily and had to apologize for saying that. You can be assured that they would be doing exactly this sort of thing elsewhere, if they could get away with it. UPDATE: SRS has removed all the comments by the guy opposing the burning of paintings, despite his apology. They're still in his profile, so he didn't delete them himself.
