I read in a article about the new X-Files that part of the reason why they didn't immediately continue with the franchise was the post 9/11 attitude that it was no longer okay to suspect or criticize the government. When it isn't feasible to perform fiction around something, I think that's a little scary.

This kind of corruption is common place in America and has been for decades. (Arguably since 1913 - The inception of the Federal Reserve)
