The only reason I said this the way that I did. Voat is what YOU make it! We have a chance for an excellent community here. I have been here for 6 months. And I ain't going anywhere else. When I first started I was a commenter. Then I noticed the content was starting to lack a little bit. Then I changed my position and turned into a submitter

.there are times at night because I work 3rd shift that I can only lurk.So survival is more important to me than anything. Right now content equals survival!! so to make a short story long submit more;)

Thought I'd weigh in here since I post a lot. I generally post headlines exactly as they appear -- to avoid accusations of sensationalizing. It occurs anyway. When I do change a title, it is generally to convey info that was presumed in the original title, for instance the state or town in which something occurred to make the headline sensible to the reader.

I do post some link bait -- why? Often as an illustration of how things are being portrayed by the MSM. That is, the news isn't what is in the article, but the way the media chooses to present it. Whether or not we 'like' the way the media portrays things, they often do it with profound bias. It is important to understand and recognize it for what it is.

That said, there are posts and posters that are beyond the bounds. As Oscar Wilde once said, "I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an ass of yourself." Of course none of us have an obligation to listen to screed. A far better solution to the problem would be the ability to ignore users or sources you prefer not to see. Amalek is free to post all she wants though I don't want to see it. She is not censored but I don't have read a word of it.

Finally, I post much more than I ever did at the other site, not for karma or points, but because I like VOAT. It is a far more civil here despite the 'safe spaces' there. VOAT has a wonderful give and take -- even amongst people who fundamentally disagree. The one thing that is lacking is the depth and breadth of content. Rather than bitching about it, like @rectifryer, or moving on I decided to do something about it. I began posting interesting content whenever I came across it. I would prefer to say I saw it here first. The goal is to foster discussion and debate while helping VOAT provide the rich content we've all come to expect.

Though the amount and quality of content is improving, VOAT still has a long way to go. How often do you see posts on the front page that have been there for more than a day? It's even worse in some of the subverses where 'new' posts can be weeks old. Please help make VOAT better -- post interesting things you come across to help build a thriving community here on VOAT.

Thanks,

FreeSpeachRocks

From a guy that submits a lot. I could not have said it any better. I try to post as much as I can. I do work and I do have a life outside of the Internet.

Every chance I get I post as much as I can. And like you said, its not for points. I want voat to survive. The only way it will survive is through content.

Its not only that but most of the breitretard stories that are posted offer no sources at all.

That's not true at all. Milo and Bokkari are two amazing journalists who do great work.

We came here to avoid Reddit's rhetoric, not adopt it.

Rhetoric is a product of culture, and it's not a product of a communications tool. Reddit and voat are just tools. Voat does less censorship. Other than that they're about the same thing.

What you read here is a product of our English-speaking culture on Earth, by and large. Don't blame the tools.

There really is very little of that stuff, /v/news is right wing controlled. I get where this poster is coming from, I'm centrist mostly but lean right on gun rights and defending all the Constitution, on Reddit I would be certainly be considered right wing, on Voat, I am for sure a centrist.

One of the main problem in /v/news is certainly the mass of Breitbart.com articles and that site is all about the fee-fees; it panders to a certain outlook and is heavily skewed. I've been guilty of upvoting some of it due to confirmation bias myself as well.

However, I have the intelligence and introspection to know why and what level it works on me. The reality is its a garbage opinion site using often poor or no sources to push an agenda. An agenda that reflects some of my own views about immigration, gun rights and radical feminists for sure, however I also know it's very UK tabloid like and trash.

This isn't just a super conservative version of reddit.

What do you consider a good news source ? There can be no doubt that the mainstream news is deliberately suppressing news that doesn't fit the agenda. When they can whisk a story about a "Gay black guy killing reporters on camera" off to the dustbin after a couple of days, but a crazy kid shooting up a church stays for months, you know there is bias.

Pfff, I saw a clip from CNN where Anderson Cooper and his guests played with his puppy for 15 minutes. I think it was his birthday or something. No idea what story they were trying to bury that day.

There are too many clips on YouTube of him with puppies for me to find it.

Seriously, he must be CNN's Glenn Beck

Anderson Cooper has made a bizarre revelation that he sings 'Happy Birthday' to himself twice every time he washes his hands in the bathroom.

While admitting his habit has sparked a few odd looks in the CNN restrooms, he insisted that he does it to keep any flu germs at bay.

Don't just downvote them.

A comment goes a long way to helping the person understand why you downvoted them. Typo, sensationalism, ALLCAPS, whatever... It helps if they know why it has happened.

But don't stop there - engage the site as much as you can.

If you want to see the site be better, comment and vote on everything you have even the slightest response to. The more that is said and done the better the discourse will be.

Brah, not only are you exceedingly unlikely to change their minds (in fact, quite the opposite), but I don't have infinite time to engage in infinite Internet arguments with an infinite army of wingnuts.

You don't have to argue with them, but having your voice there helps articulate your opinion.

A smart person softens their behaviour when they are looking to appeal to people. So your opinion clearly stating that you hate it when people post pictures of giant obvious fake tits in /v/bustybabes will be known after you have made that comment a few times. After that a user who has made use of the subverse and contributed will know that there are users who dislike fake tits. They will either post it regardless, post to a more promising subverse, or tailor their contributions a bit more to suit the known demographic.

I have a simpler name for what that article talks about: confirmation bias, and it affects everyone fairly equally.

It's the same problem 24 news stations had back when they started all the way through now. Quality stories are rare but there is an endless stream of shit if you can bullshit enough. So we have a problem of shit quantity over good quality.

Welcome to the Internet! :D

It's not even about the content, the bandwagon jumpers who read the misleading headline and don't bother actually clicking into the article before upvoating or commenting are the one's bringing it down for every one.

Does 'sensationalized' include title with too many capital letters ?
