Are you sure you're in the right field? The stuff I've seen bitched about in the common core math section is stuff I figured out how to do in elementary school without ever being taught it. It's basically just rearranging a problem in your head to make it simpler to parse. I could understand if you were upset about the bullshit feminist brainwashing in common core, but this? If it's really like astronomy to you then you might want to look into pursuing a different field...

I have a B.S. in Applied Mathematics and I can confirm that common core math is retarded. This should come as no surprise though because common core was created to fight "white privilege" by making it difficult for parents to help their kids on their homework.

there is a video of teachers using common core that show -4=16 since common core allowed them to come up with both answers. they are satan.

Can I get a link to such absurdity?

There are lots of fun things you can poke fun of in math. I always liked 1+1=3, round all of these numbers 1.4+1.4=2.8

Teachers used to teach the mathematical concepts, and clarified them with examples and small algorithms you could do in your head.

Under common core, teachers teach the examples, and assume that students understand the underlying concept.

This is why common core math is bad. It promotes reciting instead of understanding. It's also why common core maths can promote brainwashing, despite being maths: it discourages thinking.

That's actually the exact edit:opposite of what is happening. With the old way teachers only taught the basic algorithms. They didn't clarify what was actually happening with those algorithms, they just taught us to use them because they worked leaving most kids clueless as to what was actually happening. What I've seen in the math portion of common core is the teaching of how to conceptualize math problems so kids actually know what is happening before teaching them the method to get to the answer fastest.

Commoncore math is impractical. Especially since in the real world, all math is done using computers.

So we should give them calculators? I'm not seeing where you're going with this. I still use what I taught myself way back then, and it has served me very well every time I need to do basic math in my head. So how exactly is it impractical?

It isn't meant to be practical, it's meant to get kids to think. Any idiot can follow an algorithm, and that's what we have been teaching for so long, just do the steps. Real world problems don't follow a formula.
