I'm brazilian and I had dengue fever at least 2 times. 15 days of my life lost each time I got it.
Can you combat a mosquito that literally put their egg on flowers? Anything that is able to retain water is a potential breeding pool of the species, even a crack in the asphalt. In my opinion, vaccines would be a better approach to deal with the problem, but we are all aware that those take time to research and perfect.
The government DOES alert and begs the population to not leave anything that could retain water around, but it falls on deaf ears. Pretty much every home has a television here, and the Health's Ministry advertisement has at least 4 different commercials currently going on with the same message: don't leave anything out, do your job and let's win this battle. So, the biggest issue in my opinion is because people are uneducated and don't do their part to keep the mosquito growth in check. People often say something about brazilian hospitality, but in reality, we are uneducated as fuck when it comes to the environment. A recent proof that is all around is the garbage on the opening of the Tomorrow's Museum. The truth is that it's like that everywhere. The population is uneducated and can't bother to use a trash can.
People are only reaping what they sowed when they throw garbage around and when they don't build their houses properly.
