Let's have some electrical engineers speak up about this BS. I worked on gas turbine generators as a controls engineer. One assignment was Tenerife Island in the Canary Islands. Just several generators synched together which showed me how 2nd and 3rd generators can be synched to the first one operating. A single generator can be operated in island mode where it is not synched to the rest of the grid and can provide local power. Most military bases can also operate backup generators in island mode for their needs and they do this by disconnecting from the rest of the surrounding grid.

We all have seen how fast power companies can respond. Simultaneous destruction of all the 9 substation equipment is not gonna happen. So I am not worried about giving up more freedoms and privacy for government propaganda and scare tactics.

Solar flares, which we aren't hardened against would fuck us. A decent hacking attack on the order of a stuxnet that would somehow overload some stations.

what about an EMP from a nuke? Then, not only are your power stations down, but everything electronic in the EMP radius would get cooked.

so yeah, it could happen.
