There was - relatively recently, i.e., in the 80s if I remember correctly - a heated debate within the University of Lausanne about whether or not they should rescind the honorary degree they bestowed upon Benito Mussolini - a few decades earlier - for his contribution to economics theory (if I recall - not sure about that one). I don't remember what the outcome was actually - I didn't really care at the time.
But yeah, I agree with you. For one thing, the whole idea of honorary degrees is pretty ridiculous I'd say, but once an educational institution grants one, for whatever reason, and thus decides to be somehow associated with some celebrity, they should live with the consequences. One shouldn't try to rewrite history.
