Yep, its the EGO that is creating this reluctance.
But the core issue is that people's choice to believe something is CONTINGENT on the implications of that belief. So if by choosing to believe that your predictions at the outset were wrong you then demonstrate one's error and fallibilty, you recognize that that would be a blow to the ego. A blow to the ego is often an unacceptable consequence. And so the subject persists in their initial predictions/beliefs.
Same for things like believing that Islam is a Religion of Peace when it is clearly not about peace. SJW have hitched their pony to this idea and no matter how much the Hadiths and the Koran and the actions of Muslims contradict that idiotic premise, the SJW persists in it because they feel invested in their original position and don't wish to admit error. They also wish to avoid the corollary, that Islam is a religion of violent oppression, because that suggests that violence may be necessary in confronting Islam, something that does not jive with "Social Justice".
Same for climate deniers who 10 years ago poopoo'ed man made global warming. 10 year later, with all the new data and CO2 measurements since those original denials, these folks are still set on denying man's role and the necessity of change in energy policy away from fossil fuels.
The epitaph for the Human Species is going to read "They refused to let information change their minds".
