That weapons expert quoted in the article sucks. The rifle is a shorter version of a contemporary general purpose rifle, the AR-10 pattern of rifles and its spinoffs have never been an exclusively military weapon aside for select fire versions after 1986. These people are not commandos in police uniforms, anyone in most countries could get the clothes and vest as a costume or to wear the pants or shirt as casual wear. These cops had a long arm because they knew there was a much greater chance of needing a firearm so they brought a more effective firearm, like any cop, and most citizens, in the Americas would. The only functional difference between these rifles and the outdated ranch rifles Parisian cops had after the attacks is that AR pattern rifles are more precise, have a better reputation for reliability, and are more modular so the end user can tailor the weapon to their needs and preferences. And the effective ranges are wrong a 5.56 rifle like that with a barrel of 10 inches or more can hit at greater than 600 meters with a skilled shooter, the pistol can reach out past 100 meters with a skilled shooter as well. Most people from all walks of life mount flashlights and red-dot sties to their guns if they can, a red-dot is a better sight under most circumstances and having the ability to see something before you fire makes sense. They carried spare ammo because nobody has ever wished for less ammunition in a gunfight. They carried sidearms in case their primary weapon went out of action for any reason and they still needed to send rounds toward the threat. And lastly, they had armor because the threat warranted it, they had reason to expect murderers with rifles so they wore rifle plates. The helmet and goggles could barely stop a pistol round but they're great at stopping blunt impacts and high speed debris.
I can't stand fear mongering articles like this that panic over police using practical equipment without any real knowledge of the subject matter. It would be much worse of they stuck to three piece suits and bolt/lever/pump action rifles/shotguns and revolvers so as not to offend delicate sensibilities.

I know their reputation. But OP took them seriously enough to post this.
