It was unfortunate timing for him, and the shift in focus definitely worked to Hillary's favor, but that being said, this thing happened, and it was absolutely appropriate for them to bring it up at the debate. How awkward would it have been for the nominees of one of the major parties to stand there the day after a major terrorist attack talking only about taxes and education?

Yes, events like Paris happen, but that does not mean important things like taxes and education go away. There should be room to cover both the everyday issues and the unexpected. We should not shutdown everything just to go on an emotional bender when a tragedy happens. Anyone who puts feelings solely ahead of the running of a nation does not demonstrate the ability to run said nation. There's nothing awkward in taking some time in the debate to cover the events in Paris and then move on to other issues. Ignoring one set of important issues for another is awkward. A proper leader should be able to handle both.
