In fact the US can go just as far in these things as many muslim countries, the minimal marigable age in say Massachusetts is 12 with parental consent. The law in the Netherlands is that if you got married in another country then you will still be married in the Netherlands no matter what. This makes sense as otherwise many mariages from around the world could no longer be valid (dutch law requires both to be 18 unless parental consent and pregancy in which case 16).

I wonder how many 12 year-olds have been married in Massachusetts in the last century? Plus in many Muslim countries girls get married at like 8 to guys that are 35 or older. The closest thing to that in the US is probably FLDS communities but they aren't exactly legal.

Well in that case could we please convince Massachusetts to change the law? That would at least show that the US is offically (and legally) distancing itself from this practice. And in general I'm pointing out that this law would also invalidate quite a number of us mariages that are 17-17 which can lead to some very annoying situations, for example if you are not married and not familiy then you have no say in medical situations. So I think we should be very careful with this kind of legalasation to not also invalidate more or less reasonable marriages if they are valid in the country of origin.
