I completely agree. I am not a Catholic myself, but what I like about Pope Francis is that unlike his predecessors he seems to believe in and practice what he preaches, even to the extent of crossing some lines previous popes wouldn't dare to. Time and time again he's shown he's willing to lead by example.

to astromachine and eightheaded, sure this pope is a lot better than the last asshole who wore Prada shoes and was a Nazi, but l don't believe for a second that any of the things he does are done organically or with conviction. The church finally realized that they had too much hubris and had gotten too cocky, so they made a smart internal decision to change strategy by forcing out the old pope and bringing in an absolutely brilliant new P.R. team to repair their image with stunts like this one.

I think it is a bit of both really, the church as an entity made a PR move to put someone with the proper convictions to help improve their image. If you look at his history, he is pretty much known for being like this. Progress is progress and if the church has finally gotten the message that people are tired of their old ways I'm a happy little atheist.
