Quick run down of the facts:
exis banned several users yesterday for rule 1 (be nice, civil, stuff like that)
exis, at some point, left for the day
one of the banned users posted about it in a sub
users told that person to post to /v/protectvoat
said user did so
readers and users of the said sub pinged other mods, atko and exis; replied to the comment that exis made announcing the ban of the user; as well as downvoated him and other comments he made earlier that day.
other mods that were online said nothing because we had no idea why he did what he did and we were going to ask him when he was on next.
at some point exis came back
he made a sticky (I was on mobile and read it fast so I can't quote exactly what he said) that was something about "enforcing rule 1".
i got a spam report and as I was banning the user, I noticed the large ban list for rule 1 violations.
i'm shit on mobile so I was going to deal with it later
come back, exis is kill
So I'm sure you are all wondering "what happened??". We have no idea. But what we do know is that how it was handled was extremely disheartening. Think about how people deal with each other in every day life. If one person has an issue with another, they generally talk to the person about it. Gathering others to discuss the problem is what an intervention is. Interventions are for on-going problems.
People have bad days. Anything could have happened to cause this. Something could have happened to a family member, friend, health, etc. Exis was here for over a year and modded two large subs without any issues. Instead of giving him the benefit of the doubt, and waiting for him to explain himself, people bombared him with PMs, pinged him, replied to a bunch of his comments, downvoated him, and reported his comments as spam (which went to him because it's christmas) all before he even had a chance to say something. Why? What reason had he given you in the past to distrust him?
In addition to that other mods were asked to explain why he did what he did. We don't share passwords. That means we can't read each other PMs or see who we have tagged on AVE. So none of us had any clue if the bans were legitimate or if they weren't. Why were people unwilling wait?
In the end, exis woke up to all of that and maybe it was the straw that broke the camel's back.
As it stands now, rule 1 remains and it has always been in effect. Shortly after the last rule change, we started getting messages from people upset that it wasn't being enforced. We are all on at different times, so it took a bit before we were able to all get together and discuss it. None of us knew what we were going to look for. So, we decided to wait for user reports and discuss them with whoever was online and decide on a case-by-case basis. Repeat violators would be banned. This is where the comment exis made about rule 1 came from. This wasn't a conspiracy. Exis wasn't the fall guy.
The reason it wasn't being utilized, was because users have remained, for the most part, civil and we stopped getting reports. A few have been warned, some have been tagged, etc. That is about it.
For future reference: if you have an issue with a mod, PM them. Give them time to respond. If it is obvious they aren't online, wait for them to come online. If you aren't satifised with the conversation, or are positve you are being ignored, message the other mods and explain the situation. There is also the option of IRC. There is a link that will take you straight there with just one click.
Everything can be undone. Nothing is permanent. If your post is removed and you think it is wrongly removed, message the mod who did it and they will probably let you repost. We get a lot of spam comments and in deleting, mistakes can happen. If it happens to you, message a mod and ask about it. This system has been working flawlessly. Everything was fine until it wasn't utilized.
There is zero need to gather people for an intervention when there isn't an on going issue. There was a mention that we removed our ban log from the sidebar. It was never there to begin with.
Heads up for the future. This will be left up for a few days and after another sticky about paywalls will be made. Those of you who have VPNs, tor, etc; it would be great if you could help. More information will be posted when the sticky is made.
NOTE: this is not about bans or anything. This is an idea I had that might help with efficiency.
