qBittorrent, a much better, cross-platform, open source program.

With roughly 150 million monthly users uTorrent is by far the most used BitTorrent client.

Until late August, when suddenly their numbers started dropping...

I've been wanting to get away from utorrent for a while now but I've been really slacking on that. Maybe this will be the big push I needed.

Deluge has all you need for a great torrent experience. It's free, cross platform fully featured torrent client, looks a fair bit like older uTorrent

http://www.qbittorrent.org/ , quasi-clone, but without the crap. The website is down currently though.

uTorrent is already making you pay. It's malware that uses your computer to farm bitcoins for them.

Can you explain how? My CPU load is 2-3% with 90 torrents that are seeding right now (protocol encryption is enabled). My GPU load is 1%. I don't see with what are they mining.

I don't say uTorrent is the best, I would change it, but it's a pain in the ass to add again every torrent because they are everywhere on my HDD, so I have to open .torrent file in another client, then I have to set the download location where the torrent is already downloaded, so it would load again the files without re-downloading. I can't delete them because I use some private trackers.

http://www.winbeta.org/news/latest-utorrent-update-includes-bitcoin-mining-software-may-slow-your-pc-significantly

Many of these kinds of programs are sleepers. They will not run when there is a user on, and will usually wait for a set amount of time of inactivity before turning on & shutting down immediately upon user input of any kind. Due to this sleeper malware (which is most of the bitcoin mining stuff) is very hard for an average user to detect unless you go looking for it. It's designed to be as unnoticable as possible.

It may be hostile but it's true. Though I'd say they were just ignorant of other options.

Users will just torrent cracked versions of uTorrent...

I never understood why people keep using uTorrent or any closed source torrent application. The bit-torrent protocol has been open source since Brahm Cohen created it on day 1.

maybe they'll develop a system in which artists can get micro-royalties

Weren't these the assholes who put bitcoin mining software into a release?

Yes. I'm honestly surprised they still have any user base, let alone being the most "popular" client.

Well they lost me a long time ago. I run Deluge now, which does just fine for me.

Why the hell are people still using uTorrent? They got roped for bitcoin mining in the background, not even that long ago either. If you are still using uTorrent you haven't been paying attention.
