Fuck anyone that is bashing people with student loans. I've been poor my whole life. White guy, so I don't qualify for shit pretty much. Doing business/accounting as my major, going to graduate with a little under 20k in debt. Working so I can keep up with the rent, parents can't afford a bigger place for all the kids so I have to live on my own. That is with 2 years of community college and grants. Fuck predatory student loans. Fuck high as shit tuition. Fuck the country that let its citizens go broke for an education. Fuck people saying white men have privilege, I've been busting my ASS off for this shit, been working my whole life just to work twice as hard after I graduate to pay off my loans just to hear "non privileged" people say I'm privileged. Suck my dick. I hope the bubble bursts, just to prove that it was fucking bullshit in the first place.

Edit: Dear down voter: fuck you too

Why didn't you pursue other options?

I joined the military to help pay for college because I was in the same situation as you. I even took an engineering major because business majors are so flooded in the market that make it difficult to find a job.

[–] cryoshon 0 points 3 points (+3|-0) ago

"other options" like moving to another country where they're a bit more civilized? Seriously, you can't discharge student loans even if you're completely and totally disabled-- they allow you out of them at that point, but they bang you on your taxes for the "income".

Military service might work for some people, but it isn't realistic to expect all the people who can't pay for their student loans to join up-- there's millions and millions of people who can't pay, and the military just can't take them all. Even if they could, trading your body to the state in exchange for an education is ultra shitty and certainly fascistic. Then there's the whole US military is typically used in morally-wrong wars of aggression-- but that's a very minor point in the context of the issue of student loans issue.

This isn't about black people. This is about the 1% who keep getting richer while the rest of the country gets poorer. Tuition and living costs keep going up and when you graduate you end up taking the same shitty wage working for the 1% if you're lucky.

Tuition and living costs are going up because of the fake-jobs we have inflating the economy, morons taking government hand-out jobs, government inflated paper-degrees and trying to crow-bar their way into an ideological 'non-working-class' of middling-managers and checklist fuckwads.

It's the anti-think marxist SJWanker movement of subhuman scum who are trying to hold society hostage through need-based and story-feels-based economy.

THIS is corroding the middle-class, this is inflating the economy improperly and that's why we have underproduction and underthinking and over-entitlement.

We moved into a engineering based economy and those who cannot even think analytically are adapting with the most disgusting commie bullshit ever pulled.

Thanks to affirmative action, black people who otherwise wouldn't be qualified to get into colleges are accepted. And being poor they end up taking out college loans to fund it, then they they drop out because there isn't affirmative action for grades.

Whoever thought that letting in unqualified black students would somehow correct past injustices was an idiot.

You have to provide people with a path out of poverty or they become a drain on society, who knew?

Poor white people have basically the same problems as poor black people. Let's not turn our country into Nazi Germany and trade Jewish people for black people.

Indeed, if they're not finding work within 3 years of graduation, they're going to have to either create their own job or they'll be waiting for someone else to be squeezed out, in bureaucracy or academia, in order to have a position to fill.

I know a chemical engineer, 8 years of schooling, masters, that has been working at McDonald's since he started college. Two years out he finally, finally...

got an internship at Oak Ridge.

I don't know if I'm going to even bother with college.

5 years after graduation here. I've been employed in a STEM field for most of that time. I'm not at my career's first job anymore. You can bet your ass that the student loans are still crimping my style. At my first career track job, they were more like slaughtering my style and holding up my life's progression.

I've often considered simply not paying... money in my pocket today is going to make my life a lot easier than a high credit score.

Me too! I went to my safe school because they gave me a full ride grant to go their, I was an RA for three of the years and I worked part time. I left college with a little over $2,000 in debt which my parent's loaned to me so that I could leave college with a four year degree with zero debt. I currently make less then I would like, however, that is still above the average American's salary so I am not complaining too loudly.

Many of us paid our way through community college working a part time job while living at home. My son is now doing the same thing and will graduate debt free. I didn't borrow money or put my parents in debt and my son doesn't want to either.

You can't get out of paying student loans. Even if they declare bankruptcy they will still have to pay them back. Student loans are special like that.

Maybe the practice of the government giving a $200,000 loan to anyone with a pulse isn't such a great idea. Yet another problem caused by big government. Before student loans caused tuition to reach astronomical levels, people could work their way through college part time. Add one more notch in the belt of socialism's great failures.

[–] Skwerley 0 points 7 points (+7|-0) ago

[–] dv1155 0 points 1 point (+1|-0) ago

The universities are hiking tuition because the government is handing out the money. There is no downward pressure on the price of tuition because student loans still allow one to pay tuition no matter how high it is. End the student loan program and colleges will be forced to slash tuition to a fraction of what it is now, or close due to no students being able to attend. This is how the free market works.

sooo, time until the student loan bubble bursts is?

1
10

[–] rwbj 1 point 10 points (+11|-1) ago

These loans are guaranteed by the government and are almost impossible to dismiss. For instance bankruptcy does not apply to student loans. We're obviously crippling our own country by putting the next generation into backbreaking debt from day 1, but for now I'm not sure this bubble even can burst.

If the govenrment doesn't want that $1.2 trillion in student loan debt to spiral out of control they're obviously going to need to do something about the situation. Stopping the loan guarantees and protections along with regulating against financial exploitation of critical industries like education would do it. But it's also a dangerous game since if access to education starts becoming unavailable to the children of the majority of Americans who are still just struggling to make ends meet then it's a great way for the future of the country to go tits up. As we enter the automation era high level technical knowledge is going to become more important than ever at the same time that general labor is going to become less relevant than ever.

0

[–] tomlinas 0 points 4 points (+4|-0) ago

I paid for my bachelor's and my master's myself, through working shit jobs and visiting some of the warmer places on the planet. The debt really isn't backbreaking, at least not if you go to public school and major in something that has an employable market waiting for it.

While tuition is certainly skyrocketing at an unacceptable rate, I really think colleges should be forced to show you the median incomes of college hires and their % placement within 3 years for each major chosen. Some people can afford to go to college and major in whatever they want, and they should, education and the arts are important. Some people go though because their parents tell them it's the path to a better life, and they major at Duke in Russian Lit and come out with more debt than a doctor making barista wages. While you can certainly say "they should have seen it coming," the age a lot of these kids are making these decisions at doesn't always mean they've been exposed to enough in life to really think about what they are picking until it's cap and gown time and they are realizing they can't find a job.

27, living with my parents, only 3k~ left on my student loan. It will be a glorious day when I pay it off and I can finally afford to rent my own apartment.

Edit: My health insurance is $360, I pay $300 to my parents each month to cover my part of the bills, student loan payments, car payments, other misc bills. If I'm lucky I'll have a few dollars left at the end of the month. I teach art, walk pets, and house sit.
