Good! Televangelists are con artists, plain and simple.

This whole scheme sounds an awful lot like indulgences, which is pretty ironic considering it's coming from (admittedly fringe) branches of Protestants. Wealth is a form of God's love? I can see most people who believe this crap aren't even familiar with the most basic parts of the Gospel. Eye of a needle and the meek inheriting the earth and all that.

Yes and the concept of "seeding" It blew me away, and I am raised a Protestant and had never heard of the concept before.

Not all are bad, in my opinion the majority appear to be alright people. "Televangelists" don't need to be taken down, "Televangelists who guilt people into giving money and promise miracles" - do.

Last I checked, Jesus didn't take payment for his services, so I can't see why you should offer opportunities only God is able to give and beg for money.

I give my 10%, willingly, and sometimes a little more if I like. I've always had food and a roof and clothes and am thankful for what I have.

I don't feel like being extorted. I feel sorry for the people who can't see through the ruse that some televangelists spin.

Instead, the IRS will just crack down on John Oliver.

Lots of people do. I can't really give any specifics but its just kinda his British accent and mannerisms? It's like i'm aware that if he wasn't a brit he wouldn't have the job, because hes not that good a host otherwise.

Lots of people around here were upset with his coverage of GamerGate. Oliver towed the SJW line about how men that play video games hate women and constantly harass them online. No mention of "video game journalist" and developers having sex with each other, taking non-disclosed pay for reviewing games, doxing, bomb threats, death threats, and harassment of journalists.

I enjoy a lot of his pieces, but some of them are a bit reaching and overly simplistic and he also generally has a very strong bias. It's going to be interesting to see what happens after he's already shot all of the fish in the barrel. He does an ok job at bringing attention to some major problems though even if I don't agree with all of his conclusions.

Please add desperate and hopeless.

I will admit to watching them, though I never sent money to them. I was in an abusive relationship and had no hope, no help, and no way out for years. No one would even believe that it was abusive. But I could write a letter to the Copelands and they would send a letter back, pray for me, and offer encouragement.

Ya, it sucks that they are taking advantage of people in bad spots in life. It sucks worse that I had no one else to turn to when I was in need.

I made it out of the relationship, and I am no longer interested in religion of any sort. But I can see why it can be a comfort.

Actually, the research was already done. The problem is that we don't pay attention to the news but we do pay attention to comedians.

These segments bring public attention and signify a shift in political support. Politicians and the government avoided scrutinizing these people because they didn't think there was enough political will to go after them. Politicians don't want to make decisions they think are unpopular because then they're afraid they'll lose their next election or whatever. After people see persuasive segments like this, they start pressuring politicians and then politicians and the government know that they're "safe" from the voters if they go after the televangelists. It's not like people didn't know televangelists were scam artists before this, but politicians have to know there's sufficient political support to go after them before they actually do it.

May be its because I am a godless heathen but I got no problem with idiots being talked out of their money just because they here the word god. And I like knowing that someone is making money and not being taxed to death.

but then think further, what do they do with that money? Buying into politics.

I am a godless heathen as well and don't mind seeing the naive and guillible taken to the cleaner either. I do mind however the part where my tax dollars are subsidizing these schemes (being tax exempt means that they do not pay their fair share thus are subsidized by the rest of us).

I don't have a problem with that either. What I do have a problem with is using their churches as a front for other business activities so they can pay less tax or they use their religion as a basis to get their followers to vote a certain way.

I've wondered this, say for example: You start a church that collects donations from all of the hateful homophobic members of the religious right to promote harsh anti-gay legislation in central Africa. However, you end up just keeping the money. Assuming you're only going after fundies and not converting moderates is this morally wrong?
A. You're intercepting funds that would be used to spread hate.
B. However, it's still defrauding people out of their shitty hateful plans.
