is that really going to stop a shooter? won't it just... start the rampage a little sooner?

"Sir, I'm going to need to inspect your bag... is that an AR-15?"

"Whoops, you caught me!"

"Oh you! Get on out of here!"

Man, I worked at a theater. Didn't pay NEARLY enough to make me search folks.

"Oh noes! Don't check my bag!"

...Says the guy with two .45s duct-taped under his arms and 3 extra magazines tucked under his balls.

This is really about getting you to buy $4 candy bars. But I must admit, it is a hilarious way to exploit the terrible murders of innocent people for profits! Pretty funny, huh? Isn't it? Oh, you corporate jokesters!

Hey -- why isn't anybody laughing? Maybe it isn't so funny. Maybe this revenue scheme disguised as an ineffective security policy is kind of sick and craven of them.

Fine Ill start duct taping sour patch kids under my balls

But at this point couldn't you just tape the candy bars to your balls?

Women will have it easy, just stuff it in their bra, I think even checking purses will cause some upset people. (lotta personal stuff in many ladys purses)

I wondered if it will get to that point...not like as many people go to theaters as they used to

[–] barrinmw 7 points 27 points (+34|-7) ago

The idea is, that adding any difficulties at all will deter some people from committing their plan at that location. Why would you shoot up a movie theater where they check your bags when you can shoot up a mall that doesnt? People, even murderers, will often take the path of least resistance.

I really don't think your average theater employee is properly equipped or imposing enough to stop a shooter. are they going to arm the ushers now? What will happen if they DO find a gun, or a bomb? the presence of the ushers in the first place doesn't seem to deter anyone, so making them a little more vigilant is a pretty ineffective gesture.

0

[–] RamenJunkie 0 points 5 points (+5|-0) ago

Its also a good way to give me yet another excuse to never bother going to the theater.

[–] ForgotMyName 0 points 4 points (+4|-0) ago

Speaking of the path of least resistance, do you know why they go to theaters? Because they don't allow concealed carry. Seriously, you march in there, you have ZERO opposition. IDGAF if you put a bag checker inside the front door, that's a joke. What stops me from ducking your little rope and running into a theater anyway? What stops me from just mowing everyone in the lobby down and then heading to a theater? Literally nothing. This is all in addition to the fact that I could easily hide a weapon on my person anyway.

This policy does absolutely nothing to dissuade would-be murderers from barging in and unleashing hell. This is a complete joke.

Fun fact: Most mass shootings have occurred in gun-free zones.

[–] Shagoosty 0 points 2 points (+2|-0) ago

It'll do neither, what shooter brought a gun in through a bag? The answer is none. They'll sneak the gun in through the back, or just stick it into their wasteband. It's the TSA all over again, the illusion of security. I for one will not be giving Regal any more of my business until they stop looking in my girlfriend's purse, who brought in pepper spray, despite their new "security".

0

[–] TimberWolfAlpha 0 points 2 points (+2|-0) ago

Yeah, theres a post in here somewhere that I suggest doing exactly that, sneaking it through the back.

The chances of you getting shot in a theater are astronomically small.

Nowhere near high enough to warrant this invasion of privacy.

There is no way in hell I'm letting some fucking joker at a movie theater go through my personal belongings.

I used to work at one of these during the batman shooting and we did bag checks after for a few weeks, we were told to ignore snacks/drinks if they had them and tell them it was for weapons, to appease the brady campaign cat ladies or whatever.

Can't speak for these though.

[–] NewWorld 0 points 5 points (+5|-0) ago

Just went to a regal. I opened my bag and blatantly flashed my bag of m&ms and was politely waved through. No one is paid enough to care about candy or smuggled snacks. What's the point anyway? Anyone could just hide the weapon on their person rendering the bag check useless. It's probably a PR move to make movie goers feel 'safe' but it's all show and nothing more.

I don't go to the movies much anymore (media server at the house is so much more convenient) but I won't be going to any Regal cinemas anymore. Oddly, I don't normally have a bag for them to search but I do have a CCW permit and I have carried into movie theaters. Does their new policy prohibit that too? As far as snacks, I can remember a time when AMC theaters had a very loose carry in policy. You could bring a large pizza through the front door and nobody would say anything. Of course, that was 25 years ago.

Probably a state by state issue. I know in my state you already aren't allowed to carry in a movie theater, nor a sports stadium, or a concert, etc... Basically any large public gathering.

[–] LastPlaceOnEarth 0 points 8 points (+8|-0) ago

As far as I can tell here in CA, if there is no sign posted, it is legal. I have never seen a sign stating that at mine.

From the Riverside Sheriff's site:

A California Sheriff has broad discretion as provided in Penal Code Section §26150(a) to issue a CCW to those qualified Riverside County citizens that demonstrate both "good cause" and "good moral character." These persons are entrusted to carry loaded, concealed firearms into our public places throughout California. Examples of such public places include our roadways, movie theaters, shopping centers and malls, grocery stores, and the like throughout California.

You are correct, it is a state by state issue. Some allow carrying into "areas of public assembly" like movie theaters, some do not, and some let each business decide by itself.

Or, better yet... Start going to Regal Cinema with intent. Here's my game plan.

I'm a guy, so I generally don't carry around purse like bags. That's all going to change. I show up with a giant fucking carpet bag. How suspicious is that? So, I get in line and some shy little 16 year old high school girl who should just be taking peoples tickets but now has to give pat downs and make sure nobody is smuggling M&Ms up their asshole. It's my turn to get molested, so I open my carpet bag... full of used dildos. Then I just say "Hey sweetheart, the snickers bars are WAAAAAY down at the bottom, inside the rubber vagina. If you really want it go down and get it".

I can guarantee, nobody gets paid enough for that shit.

Some movies look pretty damn awesome on the big screen, personally I only go once or twice per year and I'm very selective about what movie it will be. The big screen is perfect for panoramic sci-fi and the like.
