Heh... I made the main page. I guess I should add a comment. This is abnormal in most areas but it is fairly normal in Maine - not this specific thing but an attempt to see justice served fairly and honestly. This is one of the main reasons that I opted to retire here - I'd had a hunting camp here prior and really enjoyed the place. There are no billboards (they are illegal), we can concealed carry without a permit shortly, the taxes are great, the land is cheap, there is bountiful water and other resources, and it is close to Canada if we have to escape.

If this woman is charged, and she created quite a scene, it will be another step in the right direction. While I am concerned that real victims could be unhappy with this I tend to think they would be angry at the wrong person. The correct person to be angry with is the lady who lied. She is the one who is minimizing the actual victims. She is the one who is causing problems. She is the one causing people to doubt stories.

Anyhow, that is my opinion.

Taxes are great? Where did you come from? Maine is one of highest taxed states, are you going to NH to buy your booze?

Maybe great as in high? Some people are into higher taxes

I should have said my property taxes are great - and they are. I have lived in much higher taxed areas.

I wonder if she had wounds suggesting an assault when she arrived at the hospital.

I have no sympathy for false rape charges of any nature. It take one accusation to destroy a life. Even if cleared, the name never diasappears.

In this case there was no specific person claimed to be the attacker so, well, that is a positive thing. The article is an interesting read and that is why I posted it. I know that it is a topic of conversation here at times so seeing an article about the right thing being done was a nice surprise.

Yeah, no specified victim. I suspect what the police are upset about is the waste of police time and resources. Stepping up patrols in an area that did not need it left other areas that needed their presence more not as well attended. Not to mention the waste of time of the investigating officers.

"A 34-year-old woman who admitted falsely claiming she was sexually assaulted along the Back Cove Trail may be charged with a crime." ok. I thought she just recanted. If she just said "I don't want to charge him" that's slightly different. I don't want to dissuade anyone from reporting an actual assault, but this bitch admitted she lied. Throw the book at her.

Since she was willing to send her victim off to prison for years her penalty should be equally stern.

There was no victim. She recanted later that day without naming anyone. Of course she might very well have planned to name someone later but it seems more likely to me she just wanted to be a victim and not necessarily hurt someone.

And no, I'm not excusing what she did at all. Shit like this is extremely harmful to actual victims. To do something worse to them would involve actually raping them.

Edit: reread the article and she admitted lying two days later, not lasted the same day.

They need to give her years to think about how bad the life of the falsely accused person would have been. Let her sit there and be miserable.

Wait, PORTLAND? Huh, good job Oregon brothers Says Maine in big letters at the top

Filing a false report is a Class D crime punishable by up to one year in jail and a $2,000 fine.

Kinda sad that this is the punishment, if there is one at all.

This woman should definitely be punished, but because this is an extremely popular spot and very high traffic area and the attack happened at one of the heaviest times of use I feel like there was such relief that the attack didn't happen that the woman will get off lightly.

Sorta. Lived in Portland for a few years, still work in the greater Portland area and live a little further away now.
