without even having to pay anything

It's funny, because every power granted to the government is a cost. We have agreed to give up very few, very specific rights in exchange for the stability and safety of an established government.

The loss of a few freedoms is what we're already paying to have government, not the other way around.

But you can buy those rights and freedoms back if you have enough money. If you have a lot of money, you can even buy special rights and freedoms no one else but the rich have! Isn't our government wonderful?

The right to free speech costs nothing. It might cost the speaker some joules of energy, but it costs society nothing.
