Find out if your state does single-stream recycling and/or wheelabrator trash processing. My state does both.
Single-stream; all recyclables are dumped together (paper, glass, metal) and sorted later. ("makework" job program)
Wheelabrator; all trash ground up before landfill
Kicker; when single-stream recycling stations overloaded & behind (often), last incoming goes directly to wheelabrator & landfill...
It's a great "Shaddup!" comeback, most have no idea what happens to their Starbucks cup after put in recycle bin.
There's a good chance your bottle went directly to the wheelabrator and was not recycled.
