That whole joke was really about a bishop from Galway called Eamonn Casey. Pious as could be from the pulpit and pretty well known cos he was pretty media savvy. But then it emerged he’d carried on with some American woman and had had a son with her whom he completely abandoned. Considered a pivotal moment in Ireland’s relationship with the church. And dealt with in the most delicate of manners by Fr. Ted of course!
