Finally, this should've been implemented a long time ago. There are lots of people here, who after 30 years of living here, can't speak a word of Dutch. That includes American expats, who won't learn the language, because everyone in the Netherlands can speak English.

I don;t care American expats, they're not the ones living off welfare, voting leftist and doing all the crime. Pretty much all our criminals and welfare leeches are non-white ffs.

The problem is that you can't really target a policy like that only at those who come to leech off the welfare state. You have to target everyone, and that's a problem, because then, people who bring huge value to the society and pay huge taxes are subject to the whims of some frustrated failure of a human being who managed to find employment at the immigration office. I wouldn't want to be in such a situation, and I wouldn't want my friends who don't speak my language but live in my country to be in that situation.

This should be a thing in every country.

Americans should know English. Germans should know Germans. This should be common sense.

I'm all for diversity and being bi-lingual is awesome and some studies shows it helps with memory but to come to another country and not learn their language and expect to have special treatment is wrong.

Americans should know Powhatan.

*edit * wow! That really sparked some interesting discussion!

Puerto Rico, being part of the United States, has relatively few native English speakers. Same is true of South Texas, parts of New Mexico, and historically, Louisiana, which up until the twentieth century, had laws written in French. And in Dallas, they don't speak English; they speak Texan.

Americans do not "speak English." Some do, some don't, and it's never been part of any national system.

If you're going to be nationalist, it would help to know some basic history and geography.

Maybe in European countries where they have a different definition of Nationality. The US was founded on being a melting pot of different cultures. It's one of the beautiful things about America. Telling someone they aren't allowed because they speak a different language sounds Fascist to me.

Americans should know English. Germans should know Germans.

The official language in Germany is indeed German, so fair enough, that sounds like a legit requirement; the official language in USA however has not been defined, yep, we do not have an official language, so we can't really require anyone to speak any specific language now, can we?

I'm one of those people. I pay my taxes, I obey the law and everyone speaks English anyway so why the fuck should I learn your shit language?

I do agree it's a shit language, but you can have way more social interaction when you speak it.

These language tests are only required to become a Dutch citizen, and not to live and work as a foreign national in the Netherlands.

Most Americans expats don't want to become citizen or learn Dutch because they don't plan to stay indefinitely.

Thanks, I was being stupid, and didn't fully read the article, since I was browsing Voat whole singing. It makes sense though, expats are great for filling the hole where people rather study history or art than engineering (not that there's anything wrong with that). Although I must admit, I feel sorry for the few expats who are locked out of good Dutch jokes (and other social event stuff), because they never learned the language.

I'm all for this... If you want to come to my country (in controlled numbers) that is fine but you have to assimilate... none of this self-ghettoization bullshit

Seriously agreed. I'm so fucking tired of immigrants from Mexico trying to turn Socal into Mexico-North by refusing to learn English or take part in American culture. It's so fucking insulting to come to someones country and try to make money there but refuse to join in the language or culture. 'Hey guys, I like your money but I'm gonna keep speaking spanish and only live/talk to other Mexicans.'

I'm all up for language being a pre rec, but could you expend on the culture a bit? I mean I am all up for embracing basic civilities, and following the laws but religion and things like superstitions I think should not be imposed...

[–] Exastii 1 points -1 points (+0|-1) ago

Seriously, who cares? Most adults that migrate from Mexico are doomed to work shitty jobs like picking vegetables, and shit that doesn't require learning the language. Their kids will be forced to learn English when they go to American schools where they will eventually be "americanized".

Also " take part in American culture"? Like what? Becoming obese? Teenage pregnancy? Throwing fireworks in 4th of july? Because if that's the case, they're adapting pretty damn well.

Immigration is a problem but not because of any of the reasons you listed above.

Would America's rule apply to the parts of the US where laws and contracts are written only in Spanish? Up through much of the 20th century, laws in Louisiana were written in French. American Samoan has, oddly enough, mostly Samoan speakers with many bilingual. Puerto Rico has mostly Spanish speakers, Spanish laws, etc. Guam? Chamorro.

And of course in Texas, New Mexico, and California, people have spoken Spanish since before the United States was founded.

So, to gain residency, should people learn English, Spanish, French, Chamorroan, and Samoan? That's just off the top of my head in terms of official languages found inside the US. Haven't even gotten into Native-American languages, either.

You forgot German. It was widely spoken in Texas, the Midwest and to this day it's still the primary language of many Amish and Mennonite people.

I think this is a a good result and applaud the Netherlands for their actions. If people can't speak the language, they will never assimilate to the local culture. Also how can they fulfill their duties and take part as a citizen? Jury duty would then require a translator. Local libraries would be useless. Communicating with your new neighbors might be impossible.

I think this is extra important in schools, with the primary purpose being to educate children so that they can succeed in life (regardless how success is defined). But how could a child that can't speak the language have the same opportunities to succeed as a child that can?

[–] Mexi-kola 0 points 0 points (+0|-0) ago

The dutch do not have jury duty same as germany. But for everything else you are 100% right and I as dutch am very happy with this rule. If I would migrate to a other country my first job would be learning the language. I expect everyone moving to the netherlands to do the same.

Every country should implement this. As i saw in a very well said post earlier this week, "immigration without assimilation is invasion". If you move to a new country and refuse to adapt to their way of life, their customs, and their language, then you arent immigrating. You are invading.
