I suspect that when you're as big as Google, things like this are just minor details to work out.

Sure, I just found odd that they didn't go for an unique name. They have the resources to come up with an original name for their holding, before being featured in the news for failing to do so.

I'm sceptical Google would ever take this kind of action without conferring their lawyers, so I'm assuming they just didn't want to compromise.

Who cares? Google is going to still be the name for their core businesses and basically everything consumer-facing. The Alphabet name is really only relevant for investors.
