In other news, Alphabet is also a brand of vodka (US trademark 4736499), a student furniture brand (US trademark 4633087), an online store featuring photographs (US trademark 3738337) and an embroidery studio (US trademark 2677775) (all just a search away in the online trademark database).

I fail to see how this is news. Companies own trademarks for the same words all the time. They just have to do so in different industries. Google can't market their cars als Alphabet cars, but I bet they weren't going to in any case.

Yes, it's such a common word that its widespread use is predictable. But I bet Google would love to own the alphabet.com domain.

This is google, they will just get the .alphabet TDL (they got .dev and a few others already). Then they can have alphabet.alphabet, google.alphabet etc.

Google isn't going to care.

Probably not. Anyway, it's not something you would expect from a company as big as Google. Even the South Park kids made sure their new company had a unique name.

Or google is actually secretly in talks with BMW and the press person just isn't in the loop. They are planning to buy BMW and use them as their self driving car fleet.

Those soaring stock prices sure didn't seem to care, OP.

Sure, but nevertheless, it's something I would expect to have been researched before.

This was a dumb article. The Google alphabet is just a holding company so they can their other interests as separate companies under one umbrella company.

I suspect that when you're as big as Google, things like this are just minor details to work out.

Sure, I just found odd that they didn't go for an unique name. They have the resources to come up with an original name for their holding, before being featured in the news for failing to do so.

I'm sceptical Google would ever take this kind of action without conferring their lawyers, so I'm assuming they just didn't want to compromise.

Who cares? Google is going to still be the name for their core businesses and basically everything consumer-facing. The Alphabet name is really only relevant for investors.

I'm sure they'll just buy it.

FTA:

“We are not planning to sell the domain,” said Micaela Sandstede, a BMW spokeswoman in Munich.

Oh, it would be a shame if our search algorithm started interpreting BMW as Mercedes Benz or Audi.

are you implying that planning is worth more than a couple billion dollars?

No problem.

Google will just erase everything relating to BMW and Alphabet from their searches and they will modify the reality to suit their needs.

I don't think they forgot to do anything like this at all.
