On average we spend $78,000 per family of four in poverty.
Which is why I've been arguing in favor of a basic income. We could throw out basically all types of welfare if we had a system to just automatically give everyone a certain minimum amount of money. Then they can use that money as a consumer and vote for products. If blacks weren't raised in a society that automatically throws them off a shitty cliff when they turn 18, I think they'd have the investment in life required to keep them as a motivated contributor to society. And they wouldn't get their basic income when they're in prison. And we know how much prison tends to cost taxpayers. Cut out the problem before it becomes a problem. Wouldn't need unemployment payments, wouldn't need food stamps, wouldn't need social security, vastly lowered criminal/legal costs. All goes into an automated basic income of like $12,000/yr, paid probably as $250 a week to remove the chance that a person could waste it all at once. A big factor of the idea is that it wouldn't require begging and it would be for everyone. So it would be a bit harder to shame the poor. Next time someone yells about the poor takers, they'd have to realize they themselves could simply quit and live off their $12,000. Most people wouldn't quit, of course, they'd just appreciate any extra money. And all of this is a lead-in for automation. We're about to start bleeding jobs rapidly.
