What is certainly true is that Big Pharma brings our new drugs under patents which are in no way better than existing drugs that treat the same condition, but which have fallen into public domain. Indeed, many new drugs being pushed with advertising are inferior to existing older drugs. Why are they marketed with such enthusiasm? Because, being under patent, it is possible for the companies that make them to sell them for ridiculously high prices, whereas the older drugs ar generic and inexpensive -- their prices cannot be inflated.
