Soon we'll be able to correct what causes Down's before birth.
I’m not so sure about this. Every single cell of developing embryo has an extra chromosome. How can it be fixed during development? Not suggesting abortion is the answer. I’m just not seeing how to stop it during development. If you’re practicing natural insemination and conception instead of say IVF, there’s really no way to know whether or not the egg which is being fertilized doesn’t have an extra copy of chromosome 21. And really this goes for every similar chromosome syndrome.
Hell, gene editing tech has advanced so much you can actually buy your own in home CRISPR kit for a few hundred dollars to gene edit frogs and bacteria: https://www.the-odin.com/gene-engineering-kits/
This story is more than 10 years old, and at that point we were already able to suppress symptoms of Down's. That's why the advocates freaked out. They saw the writing on the wall that this could be the last generation with Downies in it. Then there would be no more need for advocacy.

Very interesting study. Quite a lot to work out, though, not to mention the effect these drugs might have on the pregnant mother.
Also, this type of technique would require continued treatment, from early in development (before birth) at least through adulthood. Otherwise their development will still get stunted to some degree.
Also, while I understand the need for downs advocates, I don’t understand why Downs advocates would need downs to continue to exist. Surely they’d be happy it was fixed, and move on to another cause.

Yeah I don’t see how you could change that serious of a error in the dna. I believe you are correct.
