If you have to drive through a liberal city this week, keep a 12-gauge within reach and use it when needed. Better to be tried by 12 than carried by 6.

So you'd recommend a shotgun over a pistol? Or carry both, why not.

There's a tool for every job. Pistols have their place, especially when portability and concealability are major concerns. If I don't have to carry it around or conceal it I'll take a shotgun over a pistol any day of the week. A pistol at close range puts a hole through someone's head. They could survive long enough to pull their trigger or harm you. A shotgun at close range will literally blast their skull into several pieces like a water balloon popping. They aren't going to be doing anything.
