Having a place to get an advanced education in a focused field of study is a fine thing, in principle.

Modern universities range from sub-optimal to counter-productive because we've allowed them to be infiltrated by subversives and useful idiots, whose primary goal is to push political agendas rather than provide education.

It's probably too far gone to fix, and the whole system will need to be replaced. But any replacement must be built in a way that actively and aggressively prevents that kind of infiltration. Otherwise, it will just end up the same.

Simply say that "your tragic backgrounds are not relevant, this is a meritocracy, so come prepared or don't come at all" and stop trying to magically undo socioeconomic disparity and instead focus entirely on the core mission of a university, which is to educate.

We need to develop a bit of hardness in the American spirit again. When someone craps out a sob story about how they ain't never got no breaks nohow, tell them "cool story bro, but the paper is still due Monday."

Sure, training is useful, but universities aren't the only available method of doing that.
