Some of the top earners in Cuba work for tips in the tourism sector. It's really a land of zero opportunity, so it's unsurprising refugees are extra willing to work hard - as much as people complain, you still can get ahead, even if it's getting more and more difficult.

Your implicit assumption of wealth being virtuous is interesting.

But remember the Bible (because Republican values tend also to be Christian values):

It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.
