It's Fort Wayne Indiana, and they had to anonymously file the claim to protect the mother and child.

I bet that school and teacher have VERY little done to them.

And that mother and child will have to move.

I used to live in Ft. Wayne when I was little. Can confirm the place is a conservative Christian redneck shithole.

Why would they have to move? There are millions of atheists living everywhere in the country without angering their neighbors.

I think moving from such a small minded place would be a good thing. But the school should be punished, heavily. In any country or religion this shouldn't be accepted.

I hope the family gets enough out of lawsuit to move away because you just know they're going to get shit on by the community for going against the god-fearing locals.

Yep. That teacher should be fired, and permanently banned from teaching.

I'd be raising such a fuckfest at that school if that were my child.

I considered how I'd handle it with my child. I would have made the phone call. My main annoyance would be a lack of communication for discipline that extended over multiple days. Equally, I'd want my kids to know a better method for handling differences with peers.

Guys...Please don't make me sit by myself...but...there is no god. No Jesus. No Allah. No prophets. It's more than time humanity shed religion and the nativity and willful self delusions that go along with it. Religion is a breeding ground for bigotry, violence and hate. At the very least it provides a vehicle and opportunity.

P.S. Time to fire some teachers.

Spotted the Vulcan! but seriously, i do think we need to move past religion being so ingrained into our lives. perhaps not abandon it altogether, as it is an important piece of our culture, but to at least keep it out of public affairs.

Spotted the Vulcan!

Huh? But Vulcans not only had a religion, at least some parts of it are proven on screen to be true (hence the events of Star Trek III).

A separation of church and state are defined in our constitution, yet we still have public workers going around penalizing people for talking about it. First fucking amendment, assholes.

By stating that there is no god you're making a claim that has exactly as much merit as any claims of there being a god, remember that.

Yeah I know. There's no bigfoot or santa clause either (but maybe!?). There's also a planet of people that turn into giant monkeys during a full moon. Hey, you can't prove that there's not.

As a french, when i see news like this, at first i can't believe it because in France, religion is in the private sphere. And also we don't give a shit about who believe or not in a god. USA is not a secular country ? (serious question)

[–] jeegte12 0 points 20 points (+20|-0) ago

the US is definitely not a secular country. i can count on one hand the number of proclaimed atheists i've met. i'm from texas.

[–] aFrenchGuy 0 points 13 points (+13|-0) ago

Wow, that's amazing (but not in the right way). I don't even know wich of my friends are atheist/believer.

0

[–] timdesuyo 0 points 7 points (+7|-0) ago

That's mostly because the atmosphere in the US is such that if you're atheist, you learn to keep quiet about it so that there isn't a negative professional impact.

[–] SSanf_1 0 points 1 points (+1|-0) ago

Oh well, Texas. You do realize Texas is different from what people commonly think of as the United States, right? I mean, sure it is a state and all but it really isn't like one of us. It's more like a redheaded step child.

[–] Grand_Panjandrum 0 points 0 points (+0|-0) ago

Interesting. How often do you ask people whether they are atheist? I'm from Texas. The topic of religion just doesn't come up in day-to-day conversation.

The US is a big country, some parts are more secular than others. Here's a map of states by church attendance.

I live in the Northwest and I hardly know any one that is religious (other than Hispanics).

The US was conceived as a secular country, but people ignore that when it suits them now.

My Christian step mother views the rift between "the churched" and "the non-believers" as some sort of war, or sporting event in which she roots for more people to be converted to her "side". She is completely serious about this.

for myself i would like to see the teacher and "the other adult" FIRED. this was unacceptable and they knew or should have known that it was . they decided to do it any way because they thought they could get away with it. why would you think they wouldn't do it again if they thought the could get stillaway with it?

[–] bill.lee [S] 0 points 2 points (+2|-0) ago

While reading the article I considered how I would handle it with my child. I wouldn't advocate for anyone being fired, but I also would have stepped in sooner than this parent did. Its unrealistic to expect a conversation every minute form of discipline is taken, but something that stretched over multiple days should have warranted a phone call...that is a little tough to justify.

[–] Carb0nNova 0 points 0 points (+0|-0) ago

IIRC from the first time I heard about this, the child didn't say anything to the parent for several days.
